In 1794, Quincy Adams was appointed Minister to the Netherlands. He was appointed this by the first president, George Washington. Then, in 1809, James Madison appointed him as the first U.S Minister to Russia.
In 1814, Quincy Adams led the delegation that ended the War of 1812. They ended it by signing the Treaty of Ghent. This is the original Treaty of Ghent.
From 1817 to 1824, Quincy Adams served as Secretary of State to President James Monroe. He held this title for two consecutive terms and is considered one of the best Secretary of State throughout American history. This is the presidential portrait of James Monroe painted in 1819.
