Quincy Adams and Andrew Johnson are the only two former presidents to later serve in Congress. Andrew Johnson was the 17th president. He served from 1865 through 1869 and this is his presidential portrait.
John Quincy Adams died at the age of 81 when he suffered from a stroke while on the floor of The House of Representatives. Adams fell into a coma and died two days later. His funeral was held at the House Chamber and he was buried at the Congressional Cemetery until he could further be buried at his family's burial ground in Quincy, Massachusetts.
John Quincy Adams inherited this house when his father died in 1826. He moved there with his wife after his presidency was over. Quincy Adams lived there until he died in 1848.
